Social Media
SaaS, open source and skills for social media work — with the limits of each written down. Before you pick
What decides it
Every tool claims the same networks. What separates them is which of your post formats publish unattended, and which ping your phone to finish.
What to avoid
Buying for the reporting. Depth stops at what each network's API exposes, backfill is partial, and none of the history follows you out.
What is changing
Publishing APIs are absorbing native-app composition — audio, tagging, collaborators, AI and partnership labels — while analytics fields get deprecated and replaced under existing reports.

Open source
Repositories you run yourself.Leading
- 1PostizThe clear category leader (~33.7k stars, AGPL-3.0): a full self-hosted AI-powered scheduler and publisher for 20+ channels (X, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Bluesky, Mastodon and more). By far the most-adopted open-source tool in this space.
- 2MixpostThe established open-source Buffer alternative (~3.5k stars, MIT): a self-hosted Laravel scheduler with a one-time / no-subscription model, favored by privacy-conscious teams. The #2 most-adopted repo after Postiz.
- 3Socioboard 5.0A veteran open-source social platform (~1.5k stars) with CRM, analytics and approval flows across ~9 networks. Stars accrued over many years but the codebase is older and recent maintenance is unclear — treat as legacy.
- 4TryPostA newer full self-hosted app (~424 stars, AGPL-3.0) with an AI copilot and native publishing to 12 networks, positioned as a Postiz-style alternative. Small but active; a genuine functional app rather than a plugin.

Skills
Skills you drop into a coding agent.Leading
- 1social-media-skills (blacktwist)The most-referenced dedicated social-media Agent Skill bundle (~353 stars): SKILL.md skills for strategy, calendar, and post/thread/carousel/caption writing across LinkedIn, X, Threads and Bluesky. Advisory by default (drafts, does not publish) unless paired with a posting backend.
- 2Typefully Agent SkillsVendor-published SKILL.md skills (~56 stars) that create, schedule and publish to X, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon via the Typefully API — genuinely publish-capable and officially maintained, though posting depends on the Typefully (paid SaaS) account.
- 3social-media-manager (borghei/Claude-Skills)A social-media-manager SKILL.md inside a large curated marketing/ops skill collection (~404 stars). Good if you want social alongside a broader library, but social is only one slice, so its own adoption is not separately measurable.
- 4social-media-skills/skillsThe broadest bundle by sheer count — 106 SKILL.md skills spanning writing, platform playbooks, AI media, publishing and analytics — but essentially no adoption yet (~3 stars): comprehensive on paper, unproven in practice.
